I’m a sucker for a good ole Southern Breakfast reminiscent of what my Grandma used to make. You know… the kind of meal that’s comprised of a hearty meat, at least 2 eggs, and a side of grits or potatoes. Of course it’s also typically accompanied by a fluffy biscuit that you can unashamedly use as a utensil to sop it all up.
Well, on my birthday this year, I decided to visit another one of Atlanta’s historical favorites – The Silver Skillet. As my family and I pulled into the parking lot and saw the sign “Voted Atlanta’s Best Breakfast”, my husband reminded me of our adventure at Ria’s Bluebird the year before. In case you missed it, that’s when we tried the “Best Pancakes in the World” according to the New York Times.
Eager to see if this charming diner would live up to its reputation, we patiently waited for about 30 minutes (typical for the weekend) to get a seat.

To enjoy my birthday breakfast with family
I ordered…
Grilled Corn beef Hash – Two eggs, grits or gravy, & toast or biscuit
Considering that I first tried corn beef hash in college and now it’s one of my favorite breakfast (and sometimes dinner) dishes, I was pleased with the idea of trying the Silver Skillet’s version. It was tasty but paled in comparison to the version my mom is known for making with fresh sage, hearty chunks of potatoes and crisp bacon.
The biscuits however were very good. I smothered them with country gravy instead of butter and jam. The Silver Skillet offers a variety of biscuit specialties on their menu.
My family members were kind enough to offer me a taste of their dishes as well so, I also tried the…
Belgian Waffle – This was actually quite good. It was crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle and golden. The Silver Skillet only serves Belgian Waffles on the weekend so don’t expect this treat at any other time.
Buttermilk Pancakes – These were also light and fluffy but not as tasty as the Belgian Waffle.
In summary…
I would recommend that people try the restaurant just to experience the ambiance. You’ll feel like you have been transported back in time to a classic diner that hasn’t changed its décor in over 40 years. A lot of famous people have visited the Silver Skillet over the years and there are pictures and memorabilia to show for it. Although I enjoyed my meal, I probably wouldn’t visit again unless I wanted to treat an out of town guest to the Atlanta history the Silver Skillet represents and an attraction nearby.
The Silver Skillet is known for it’s country ham and redeye gravy so consider giving that a try to get a taste of the diner at it’s best.
