The Abbey was a popular restaurant in Atlanta located at 163 Ponce De Leon Ave NE. The building that once added character and uniqueness to the restaurant is now the home of St Paul’s Presbyterian Church. Wcities.com provides a great description of what The Abbey Restaurant was like during operation.
Built in 1915, this spectacular church building was converted to a restaurant in 1968, and has been refurbished to resemble an ornate medieval monastery. Robed monks taking drink orders, a harpist in the choir loft, and candles at every table set the stage for a truly memorable dinner. The menu features American classics with often-strange twists, including fresh seafood, lamb, pork and veal offerings. Dishes like the breast of duck in cinnamon honey glaze and the mustard garlic-crusted rack of lamb draw regular praise, as does the exemplary wine list.
If you missed your chance to dine at The Abbey, you can still experience a taste of what the restaurant had to offer by trying the recipes in The Abbey Cookbook: Inspired Recipes from the Great Atlanta Restaurant.
Here’s the official product description.
All the dishes that are presented here are specialties at the Abbey; they have been requested time and again over the years by those who have enjoyed them. Where there is a “chef’s secret,” it has been gladly given; no special ingredients or procedures have been omitted. Though they originated in Hans Betram’s restaurant kitchen, the recipes have been carefully scaled down for the home chef and tested again in the Abbey kitchen to ensure their accuracy.
