Thumbs Up Diner – Long wait, but well worth it

I visited Thumbs Up Diner at its downtown location on Edgewood Avenue. The wait was over an hour for a table of 5 which is typical for this popular restaurant on a Saturday morning. In my opinion, it was well worth the wait.
I came here…
To enjoy Saturday morning breakfast with family
I ordered…
The Heap – seasoned spuds topped with cheddar/jack cheese and two eggs any style. Served with toast or biscuit.
The Heap came served in a small iron cast frying pan. What a nice touch! Once I added a dash of salt, I was good to go. I opted for the multi-grain biscuit instead of toast. It was a delightful twist from the traditional Buttermilk biscuits I am used to devouring.
My family members were kind enough to offer me a taste of their dishes as well so, I also tried…
Chicken and Waffles – Four fried chicken breast strips, two eggs any style and a Belgian waffle.
The waffles were fluffy and buttery (since I slathered them with butter) and they melted in my mouth – yum! The chicken strips were battered lightly and well seasoned. Next time I will order this – great stuff!
Side of pancakes, side of French fries
Since it was lunch time when we were seated, I ordered a side of pancakes and a side of French fries for my 3 year old daughter. As I suspected she ate both. The pancakes were just as tasty as the waffles and the French fries were lightly seasoned and didn’t need the accompaniment of ketchup.
In summary…
Remember breakfast is served all day at Thumbs Up, so there’s plenty of time to get your fix on a good ole Southern meal. Visit during the week or as soon as the doors open on Saturday or Sunday if you are able. The Edgewood location is close to the Martin Luther King Jr. District so this would be a great dining spot before or after a FREE visit to the King Center.
