Not only did I save on the admission fee (approximately $19.00) but I also took this opportunity to be a kid all over again. One of my first visits was to the parakeet exhibit. You enter a screened in area where parakeets (upwards of about 100, give or take) fly around. You can purchase seed sticks for $1.00 and hold them out so the parakeets can land on your stick and eat the seeds. Sometimes one or more will land on your stick. This is definitely a great exhibit to take kids as they will see parakeets in a variety of colors. My other favorite exhibit was the petting zoo. You have the opportunity to brush the hair of goats and sheep. The animals here are very docile and practically lay and eat as you brush their hair. I brushed and petted the hair of a sheep and was surprised at how “wooly” the hair actually is. Just be careful of the poop as you walk around. Although these two exhibits were my favorite, there are of course other animals to see. The kangaroos and the komodo dragon just lied around while the golden tamarind lions were the cutest things ever. The flamingos were hot with many people and the lion cubs were huge. This was my first visit to Zoo Atlanta and definitely recommend Zoo Atlanta to others. This is perfect for families with toddlers to kids of all ages. Something to keep in mind is that parking is FREE. I got there when the zoo opened and parked in the lot. When I left around noon, there were others just arriving and looking for a spot. In others words, the early bird gets the worm! Also, the weather is somewhat cooler in the early mornings. You can also bring your own food into the zoo. I did not know this and had I known, I would not have purchased the cheese fries from Nathan’s (do not recommend by the way). I saw many families that packed sandwiches and other goodies and simply enjoyed their meals on the available benches. This is a great way to save money. Next time, I will be prepared!!
